As the birthplace of the U.S. Coast Guard. Our Merrimack River Station in Newburyport, Massachusetts is one of 20 still active United States Coast Guard stations and home to many servicemen and women currently protecting our community and our waters. Born ready, these brave men and women work tirelessly through in climate weather, intense surf and heavy breaking seas, performing search & rescue missions, law enforcement patrol and more.

Beginning at midnight on Saturday, December 22, 2018. Hundreds of thousands of government employees have been left working without pay. While other branches of the United States Armed Forces are guaranteed pay through September of 2019, the  United States Coast Guard, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, is already high and dry.

In mid-January, state Rep. Diana DiZoglio introduced legislation calling for the state of Massachusetts, to pay United States Coast Guard  salaries during the shutdown. The state would later seek reimbursement from the federal government.

In the meantime, Massachusetts residents and Newburyport business owners are reaching out to these affected servicemen and women.  The Essex Street Inn is one of four hotels owned and operated by New England Hospitality (NEH) that is proud to be one of them. Offering one free night of lodging to active United States Coast Guard members and their families during the months of January and February, allowing them to visit with their families while on leave.

It is our pleasure to serve them as they are serving us!*
